In 2023, LGBT Tech’s PATHS Program continued its mission to open doors for LGBTQ+ individuals pursuing careers in STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics). Last year PATHS made a powerful impact, providing nearly $75,000 in educational grants, supporting mentorship connections, and celebrating the stories of LGBTQ+ professionals across diverse STEAM fields. These milestones represent more than financial aid or professional guidance; they reflect our community’s dedication to diversity, equity, and inclusion in fields where LGBTQ+ representation remains low.
The progress of PATHS in 2023 is a testament to the unwavering support of our sponsors, mentors, mentees, interviewees, and grant recipients, who work together to ensure that LGBTQ+ STEAM students and professionals are not only seen but empowered. This collective effort has enabled PATHS to foster spaces of growth and connection, bridging a crucial gap for underrepresented LGBTQ+ individuals in STEAM.
In 2023, PATHS provided educational grants totaling $74,952 to 18 students, alleviating financial pressures and allowing them to focus on their studies. A remarkable 94% of grantees reported that this financial aid reduced their stress, with over half of the recipients stating that they wouldn’t have been able to continue their education without this support. Through our mentorship initiative, PATHS created valuable connections that helped 22 LGBTQ+ individuals navigate their STEAM careers with confidence. Of the mentees, 89% reported growth in their professional networks, and 95% expressed finding a safe, supportive community within PATHS. The mentorship program has been instrumental in guiding participants to career success, with 80% of participants employed upon completing the program and 83% of those employed in STEAM roles. Additionally, 23% of participants reported income growth during their involvement in PATHS, marking the program as a critical resource for professional advancement. Our collaboration with Pluralsight One provided 200 licenses to PATHS participants, enabling them to pursue specialized training in job readiness and STEAM skills, from coding languages to cybersecurity.
The benefits of PATHS extend far beyond these quantitative accomplishments. PATHS grant recipients and mentees have shared how the program has fundamentally transformed their STEAM journeys. From connecting mentees with role models to alleviating the stress of financial instability, PATHS creates pathways that empower LGBTQ+ individuals to bring their unique perspectives to STEAM. One recipient shared, “Not only did the funds help my thesis project, which is so important for my career development, it also connected me with a wonderful mentor.” Another mentee highlighted the sense of validation and community PATHS provided, saying, “I finally felt welcome and seen in my STEAM career.” Such testimonials emphasize that PATHS is not just an aid program; it’s a community and a support system that fuels both personal and professional growth.
